Canine Cushing's Causes and Diagnoses

Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism) can be hard to diagnose, and many older dogs can display symptoms of it. Some dogs may not meet the criteria for diagnosis based on laboratory testing depending on the stage of the disease. Based on symptoms, a veterinarian may diagnose "probable Cushing's" and have the patient repeat testing in a period of time. The three primary causes of Cushing's syndrome in dogs include a small pituitary tumor (most cases), an adrenal gland tumor or the long-term use of high-dose steroids. The result is that the body overproduces cortisol.

Symptoms of canine Cushing's disease may be varied and seem unrelated.
