What Is a Mast Cell Tumor in Cats and Dogs?
A mast cell tumor (MCT) is a tumor that consists of mast cells, a type of white blood cell that is found in connective tissue such as the skin, respiratory system and intestinal tract. Mast cells are a part of your pet's immune system and protect against parasitic invaders. Mast cells contain chemicals such as histamine and heparin, which are released during an inflammatory or allergic reaction. Mast cell tumors are the most common skin tumors in dogs. While MCTs are primarily a skin cancer in dogs, they can metastasize to lymph nodes and other organs. There are two forms of mast cell tumors in cats: cutaneous (skin) and visceral (internal organs, usually the intestines or spleen).
Mast Cell Tumor Dog Symptoms
Canine mast cell tumors are the most common form of skin cancer in dogs. Mast cell tumors can be found in any breed of dog but are most commonly found in Boston terriers, English bulldogs, Weimaraners, golden retrievers, pugs, beagles and boxers. Mast cell tumors can be frequently overlooked, as they might just appear as a skin tag or small bump. Although some canine mast cell tumors are benign, most are malignant. Because they can look like all kinds of inflammatory lesions, pet owners may not notice them and they can remain on a dog for a long time before they are treated. Please be sure to check your dog regularly for any unusual growths and bring any lumps or bumps to the attention of your veterinarian, because early treatment will yield a much better outcome. Mast cell tumors in dogs can be found on the limbs, in between toes and in the spleen, liver and bone marrow. Both normal and cancerous mast cells contain chemicals that can be released into surrounding tissues. When this happens (particularly when histamine is released), side effects can include digestive problems (for example, bleeding ulcers), skin rashes, shortness of breath and other symptoms.
Mast Cell Tumor Cat Symptoms
Mast cell tumors are often found in older cats, and Siamese cats are more predisposed. Mast cell tumors in cats vary depending upon their location. On the skin, you may notice a hard, flattened growth or nodule. These skin lumps are more commonly found on your kitty's head or ears, and they can be itchy. With the splenic form, cats will often have weight loss, vomiting and loss of appetite due to the chemicals being released by the mast cells. With the intestinal form of MCT, your kitty may have vomiting, diarrhea or bloody or black tarry (evidence of blood) stool.
Diagnosing Mast Cell Tumors in Dogs and Cats
Mast cell tumors vary greatly in their size, shape, appearance and texture. The only way to definitely identify them is with a biopsy and pathology report, which evaluates them based on location, grade and size.
Causes of Mast Cell Tumors in Dogs and Cats
There is no single known cause of mast cell tumors, but there are some genetic and environmental risk factors. MCTs in dogs and cats can recur, so using a proactive holistic approach can support your pet's immunity and its ability to manage this type of cancer. While any breed of cat or dog can develop MCTs, there are some breeds that are more susceptible. There is also a genetic mutation in a protein that is related to the development of MCTs. The prognosis for cats and dogs with MCTs depends upon the grade of the tumor, its location, whether the MCT has spread and the success of the surgery in completely removing it.
Diet Changes and Natural Supplements for Mast Cell Tumors Can Help
If your dog is diagnosed with a mast cell tumor, a holistic approach with diet changes and supplements can be used along with conventional treatments prescribed by your veterinarian to support your dog's immune system and prevent recurrence. Ask Ariel has extensive experience helping dogs with mast cell tumors using hypoallergenic, low-carbohydrate diets and natural supplements. The supplements most important for treating mast cell tumors (please see detailed information below) include: AllerEaze, Organic Hemp Extract CBD Oil, Immune Harmony, Amazing Omegas, Curcumin Complex for Pets and Resveratrol for Dogs. These products help control the histamine response, fight cancer and reduce inflammation, which reduces recurrences. Mast cell tumors have a high likelihood of recurring, so it is very important to try to help control recurrences using the appropriate diet and supplement regimen.
AllerEaze - AllerEaze is the first line of defense for pets with mast cell tumors as it has been scientifically proven to naturally reduce your dog's histamine release. Mast cells are immune cells in the skin that respond to allergies and irritations in the skin. When they begin to multiply abnormally, they form a tumor. Mast cell tumors have high levels of histamine. Any manipulation of the tumor can cause a sudden release of histamine into the bloodstream. Veterinarians prescribe Benadryl to reduce the harmful effects of histamine on the pet. A sudden histamine release can cause swelling, vascular changes and inflammation. Quercetin is often considered nature's Benadryl, as it helps the body cope with the dangerous effects of excess histamine released by cancerous mast cells. AllerEaze can be used in addition to Benadryl to support a healthy immune response. AllerEaze in combination with Power Probiotic has been especially helpful for pets with mast cell tumors.
Power Probiotic - Power Probiotic is the best probiotic for pets! Backed by scientific research, this powerful multi-strain formula promotes the growth of good bacteria, supporting a healthy immune system. Power Probiotic is essential if your pet has taken antibiotics or steroids, which can kill off healthy bacteria, weakening your pet's immune response. Pure, safe and natural, Power Probiotic does not contain any fillers.
Organic Hemp Extract Oil - Organic Hemp Extract Oil is 100% organic and made in the USA. A few drops of this anti-inflammatory oil can help reduce inflammation and support a healthy immune system. Controlling inflammation is a core part of cancer treatment, which is why this is a main characteristic of this mast cell tumor dog CBD oil. The ingredients in CW Hemp Extract are being researched for their beneficial effects on cancer. Anecdotal reports include reduced pain, inflammation and discomfort. Curcumin Complex for Pets - Curcumin Complex for Pets contains all three curcuminoids for maximum effectiveness. This science-based antioxidant reduces oxidative damage from free radicals. Curcumin Complex is essential for dogs and cats with cancer as it supports a healthy immune response, has cancer-fighting properties and provides a critical antioxidant. Curcumin's benefit for cancer patients is being heavily researched, and curcumin may help inhibit cancer tumor growth. Using a combination of Curcumin Complex and Resveratrol for Dogs as a PREVENTATIVE if you have a dog prone to mast cell tumors or cancer is an excellent strategy.
Amazing Omegas for Pets - Amazing Omegas for Pets is absolutely the best fish oil available. It’s packed in glass bottles to prevent leakage of toxins from plastic into the oil. It’s also purified for heavy metals and toxins and manufactured gently so that oils are in a highly bioavailable form, which means increased absorption. Scientific research has shown the benefits of omega-3s for pets with cancer. This supplement helps pets with allergies and skin problems too!
Resveratrol for Dogs - Resveratrol is an exceptional antioxidant, backed by research, and can help your dog in so many ways:
- Cancer support and preventative (use with dog breeds that have a higher incidence of cancer, such as bichon frises, German shepherds, Labradors, golden retrievers, boxers)
- Cardio-protective (excellent for breeds prone to heart issues, such as Cavalier King Charles spaniels, poodles, dachshunds)
- Energizing, promotes longevity (excellent for senior dogs)

Boston Terrier With Mast Cell Tumors Is Doing Great Years Later
"My precious Boston Terrier, Marcie had 3 mast cell tumors removed at age 7. One of the tumors had become a grade 2. After reading the pathology report and various other articles, I was terrified of what might happen. MCT is common for Boston Terriers. She's my baby and I will do anything I can to give her the best and all she needs.
I ordered several products from the AskAriel.com website which I have been using for several years now. Other than a couple of changes in protein sources, which is necessary with dogs with serious allergies, my baby is amazing. Everybody that meets her is in awe of her beauty and comment on the glow of her coat which I attribute to Amazing Omegas. They cannot believe that she is nine years old and has puppy energy!
I thank God each day He gives me to love her. Marcie's recent bloodwork results were awesome. I know it would not be possible without Susan's help. I highly recommend her expertise and products." - Kim, Florida
Supplements that have helped Marcie include: Amazing Omegas for Pets, Resveratrol For Dogs, AllerEaze, K9 Digestive Enzymes, and Immune Harmony.
Puma In Her Favorite Spot
“Ask Ariel has been an absolute life saver for my sweet cat, Puma. I’m so blessed to have found this awesome company online during a desperate search for quality holistic supplements for pets. During the past two years, Puma has been plagued with various health issues (immune system disease, bladder issues, asthma, and a malignant mast cell tumor in her small intestine that has metastasized into her lymph nodes. I purchased your following products and use them on an alternating basis: Silver Immune Support, Immune Harmony, Power Probiotic, Immune Support Kit, Purrfect Pet CoQ10, AllerEaze, and Organic Hemp Extract. The supplements have significantly alleviated Puma’s illnesses. Besides my present cat, over the years I’ve had three others that have passed on as well as two beloved dogs. I often wonder if I had known about your company’s products when they were living, if they’d still be here today. I LOVE your products and their effectiveness and recommend them to everyone with ailing pets. Lastly but certainly not least, your customer service is extremely helpful, caring, personable, and top notch.” - Carol, Ohio
